Description
Rajeev Kumar's series transforms musical modes, or ragas, into evocative visual narratives, traditionally associated with particular times of day and seasonal moods. Radiant 'nayikas' and charming 'nayakas' inhabit sumptuous settings of ornate mansions, marble terraces and grand pavilions, surrounded by carpets, silken cushions and other symbols of refinement.
Slender, graceful figures are adorned in translucent gold-woven fabrics and richly patterned textiles, enhanced by intricate jewellery and meticulous ornamentation. Through the interplay of painting and accompanying verse, Kumar captures the sensuality, romance and emotional resonance of the human form, translating the language of music into a richly atmospheric visual experience.
In this painting, a Raag which is is sung after midnight is depicted as Chandra, or the moon, holding two white lilies while seated in a chariot drawn by two black bucks as the phosphorescent light of the moonlight fills the sky.
Presentation
Rajeev Kumar (b. 1982) is a highly skilled practitioner of miniature art typical of the Kangra region of the lower Himalayan ranges of Northern India.
Though once thriving, traditional Kangra miniature painting is now hard to find. Efforts by organisations like CORD (Chinmaya Organisation for Rural Development) keep this tradition alive, inviting a new generation to explore its beauty and the spiritual stories it tells.
Rajeev Kumar has honed his skill for over 20 years and he is assisted in his efforts with research and guidance from CORD.
