Description
A harsh light cuts the silhouette of a woman sitting in the shadow. Her gaze wanders into the distance. She wears a singular suit. The blue and yellow fabric is adorned with red polka dots. A wide white strawberry collar frames her face. This garment evokes theater costumes and figures from Commedia dell'arte.
A green mask rests on the center of her chest. This detail suggests a play between identity and role. The posture is frozen. The hands are joined with a certain restraint. The contrast between the vibrancy of the colors and the melancholy of the expression creates a narrative tension.
The pictorial treatment favors sharp volumes and marked contrasts. The striped armchair anchors the scene in a plush interior. Every fold of the fabric is worked with precision. The black and shiny shoes finish this theatrical composition. The whole plays on the duality between public appearance and inner solitude.
“ Of shadows and light " is part of the series “Studies" which proposes a dual approach, thematic and chromatic. The themes address notions such as blossoming, silence, the difficulties of human relationships, as well as solitude and introspection. On the chromatic level, a search is made around a palette of reds ochres, browns, maroons, yellow ochres, and deep greens. The forms seek to emerge from the black, thus creating a subtle dialogue between light and shadow. This approach aims to capture emotions with simplicity, offering an invitation to reflection.

Fabio Purino (born in 1972 in Hayange, Moselle) is a Franco-Italian contemporary artist whose work lies at the intersection of painting, graphic design, and cinema. Former artistic director of the European cultural channel ARTE, since 2020 he has been exploring a pictorial language inspired by film editing and the French New Wave.

His influences include Michelangelo Antonioni, Saul Bass, David Hockney, and Jean-Luc Godard.
Aesthetics and themes
His works are characterized by cut-out figures, flat areas of vibrant color, and a strong graphic tension. Purino doesn't "paint" in the classical sense: he "assembles" the canvas like a film sequence. Each painting becomes a suspended narrative fragment, questioning visual memory and the perception of time. The artist advocates a "painting of resistance," which opposes the homogenization of the contemporary image.
Recent exhibitions
Between 2024 and 2025, Purino presented several exhibitions in France and Germany (“La Bella Confusione," “Flowers," “Masculine-Feminine") before his major Italian retrospective, La Nouvelle Vague. This exhibition, held at the Palazzo delle Arti Beltrani in Trani, explored the intersection of cinema, figures, and cut-out forms. Praised for its immersive approach, it solidified his artistic and emotional connection to the city, which he later celebrated in the Spiaggia di Trani series.
