Description

Richard K Blades seascapes are in the romantic tradition of JMW Turner, who also often drew his inspiration from the North Sea where it meets the Norfolk coastline.

This piece has a luminous horizon which defines an emotive seascape. The sky glows with the soft intensity of a dying sun. Warm ochre and deep rose tones bleed into a pale violet atmosphere. Heavy clouds drift across the center. They carry a muted purple hue. Their edges blur naturally into the surrounding light.

The composition relies on a striking tonal contrast. A dark foreground anchors the scene. Deep browns and charcoal blacks suggest a desolate coastal plain. Sparse highlights of gold flicker across the terrain. These tactile strokes suggest reflecting water or distant sand.
The application of paint remains visceral. Thick impasto layers create a physical presence on the canvas. This texture enhances the raw energy of the natural world. The gaze is pulled toward the thin strip of light separating the sea from the sky. Silence permeates the scene. It captures a fleeting moment of transition. The focus remains on the atmospheric interplay between shadow and brilliance. This artwork evokes a sense of profound solitude through its expansive scale and saturated palette.

Presentation

Richard was born in 1978 and raised on the border of Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire. His passion for painting began whilst living in Cornwall in his mid twenties. Having grown up in East Anglia, much of his work is based on and inspired by the skies and landscapes of the area. Along with the landscape, he is also a still life painter, fascinated by the quiet corners of studios and how light falls upon objects and plants.

Richard, who lives and works in North Norfolk, says of his work

“I am primarily an expressive landscape painter working in the English Romantic tradition.

I feel a deep connection to the landscape and the artists who also chose the sky, sea and land as their source of inspiration. Turner, Constable, Seago, Daubigney and Courbet are personal favourites of mine. The gaps of generations and hundreds of years matter little. Regardless of what has changed in this world, the technological advancements and societal shifts, the landscape is always there, as something eternal, the ever-changing muse, always present, yet never the same. ”

Richard’s work is regularly exhibited across the UK and is held in private collections, worldwide.
