Ancient Page From series Carry the Ocean, 2017

Shine Huang

This artwork presents an evocative image of an aged manuscript page, rendered in a negative format that lends it a ghostly, ethereal quality. The left section of the image features densely packed, linear text that appears to be archaic, suggesting a historical or ancient origin. The words are indistinct, shrouded in mystery, inviting viewers to ponder their significance and the knowledge they once conveyed. The right portion of the sheet is noticeably devoid of text, creating a stark contrast that emphasizes the passage of time and the fragility of historical documents. The paper seems weathered and brittle, with frayed edges and a noticeable tear on the upper right corner, invoking the notion of the manuscript’s journey through time and its survival against the odds. The grayscale palette enhances the artwork's sense of antiquity, while the luminous, almost translucent quality of the paper against the dark background evokes a feeling of uncovering hidden secrets. This piece challenges viewers to reflect on the impermanence of the written word and the relentless march of history. It is a profound exploration of memory, legacy, and the enduring power of human expression across time.
