Description
The photography on paper is mounted on Aludibond and verso is equipped with a surrounding margin bar.
“Mind the gap", the gap between platform and carriage, perhaps the chasm between fellow human beings, the abyss between languages. Perhaps one gets caught in the undertow of a life vein of our modern urban world, of which the subway is a metaphor. Here the interconnectedness, the speed, the drive, and the loneliness of urban places seem to condense.
Photographically, Wolf-Dietrich Weissbach dissects these places underground in panorama format in a multifaceted way. The acting people are reduced to schemata, to ghosts that float through or stumble, jump, repeat themselves in the image. Technically, this is the result of the combination of long-exposure and multiple exposures (sometimes up to thirty exposures on the same piece of film).
In 1998 he began the project of photographing subway stations worldwide as much as possible with the panorama camera (Noblex U 150) on color negative film (negative format: 5 x 12 cm). So far, pictures have been taken in Stockholm, Paris, London, Barcelona, Prague, Stuttgart, and most recently in Berlin. The series will continue. The project is supported by the cultural foundation of the image rights society Bild-Kunst (Bonn).
