Description

This intriguing artwork challenges perceptions by merging the human form with technology. It depicts a figure with a vintage television set replacing its head, crouched in a dimly lit, bare-walled room. The stark contrast between the muted environment and the vibrant, multicolored screen creates a striking focal point. This screen emits an intense glow, illuminating the surrounding area and drawing attention to the open trapdoor beneath the figure. The composition suggests themes of escapism, surveillance, or the impact of media on identity. The use of a retro television introduces a nostalgic element, contrasted by the unsettling, futuristic concept of a human-machine hybrid. The confined space evokes feelings of isolation, prompting reflections on the consuming nature of technology. This thought-provoking piece compels viewers to contemplate the intersections of humanity and machinery, pushing the boundaries of self-identity in the digital age.

From the series Ser Cosa …this series of portraits that at first glance appear to us as extraterrestrial beings, once we understand the images they become more familiar than they appear, “humans too human” perhaps more human than they appear. And for Adorno's negative dialectic, the problem was given as a human being in a world hostile to humans, the characters of Etem seem so natural to us to the extent that their presence is outside the pose of the portraits of the kings of the past, rather resemble the workers, peasants, common people in general, portrayed by Gustave Courbet or the realists of the mid-19th century, these new realists are captured by the camera in the usual development of their daily lives, in the hostile world of the desert or the swamp or the storm… Hernán Pacurucú. curator Fragment of the text: A glacial aesthetic. Argentina • 1977

Presentation

Visual artist. Producer for the Museo Municipal de Arte Moderno Mendoza. Member of Plataforma Amiga. I received 3rd Prize at the National Visual Arts Salon 2020/21, 1st Prize at the Provincial Visual Arts Salon 2018, 2nd Prize at the Máximo Arias Photography Salon 2017, 1st Prize at the Vendimia Photography Salon 2009. I received grants from the Fondo Nacional de las Artes, Ministerio de Cultura de la Nación, Fondo Provincial de Cultura, among others. I made work analysis with Fabiana Barreda, Esteban Álvarez, Ananké Asseff. My work was part of the celebrations of the bicentenary of the Argentinean independence in the exhibition "Congreso de Tucumán, 200 years of Argentinean Art". I have had individual exhibitions in the Provincial Museum of Fine Arts Franklin Rawson (San Juan, Argentina), Pumapungo Museum (Cuenca, Ecuador), Anthropological and Contemporary Art Museum (Guayaquil, Ecuador), Municipal Museum of Modern Art of Mendoza (Mendoza, Argentina). I participated in group exhibitions among which stand out: La marca original (CCK, Buenos Aires 2019), Poéticas Políticas (Parque de la Memoria, Buenos Aires 2016), Dura lex sed lex (Bienal Sur. Centro Cultural Parque de España, Rosario). With the support of the Fondo Arg. de la Cultura I published the book "Rodrigo Etem / el flujo de la vida cotidiana en imágenes y acciones" with texts by Roxana Jorajuria. Some of my works are in public and private collections (Gustavo Bruzzone, Hugo Albrieu, Colección MMAMM, Colección Fundación del Interior, Colección Ministerio de Cultura Prov. de Mendoza, among others). I have shown my work in Argentina, Ecuador, Mexico, Bolivia and Taiwan. Graduated from the Faculty of Social and Administrative Sciences, 2002. Currently I work as a researcher and producer at the Museo Municipal de Arte Moderno Mendoza. Member of @plataformaamiga virtual and affective space that promotes different instances of meeting, dissemination, visibility, training and exchange of contemporary art in the Mendoza scene.
