Description
In this photograph, artist Moena Weiss explores the layered and shifting realities of queer existence in a country still deeply marked by the legacies of colonialism and apartheid.
South Africa's LGBTQIA+ community exists within a landscape defined by profound dualities. Constitutional and legal progress stands in stark contrast to ongoing violence, marginalization, and erasure. In Cape Town, queer life flourishes—radiant, diverse, and culturally vibrant—yet remains entangled in structures shaped by race, class, and gender inequality. Despite these tensions, queer South Africans continue to forge networks of resistance, joy, solidarity, and care. Their lives are marked equally by vulnerability and resilience, defiance and dignity.
This intimate portrait captures a moment of profound stillness. The composition focuses on the vulnerability of the human face. Soft light cuts across the skin. It creates a dramatic contrast between warmth and shadow. The subject rests with closed eyes. This gesture suggests a deep internal reflection. Shimmering blue makeup adds a touch of ethereal artifice to the natural softness of the features.
The photographer utilizes a background in psychology to explore the bond between lens and subject. This artwork is not a mere image but a study of trust. The gaze is inward. The atmosphere is quiet and contemplative. Every detail emphasizes a sense of safety and openness.
The technical execution relies on a precise C-print on fine art paper. This medium preserves the delicate gradients of the lighting. The warm tones evoke the specific energy of a private space. The result is a conceptual exploration of identity and intimacy. It transforms a personal encounter into a timeless visual poem. The frame closes on the subtle curve of a lip and the gentle slope of a cheek.
Presentation
Moena Joy - Dada Weiss is a Berlin-based photographer. With a background in psychology, Moena is fascinated with documenting the human environment and exploring the encounter between the camera and people she photographs. She
works mostly with portraiture. As well as paint on photographs, collage and Video Installations. For her, a portrait of a person holds tremendous vulnerability and intimacy between the photographer and their subject and thus establishes a special form of relationship. It is mostly important for her to connect with the person she will photograph upfront to earn the trust and that people let her see facets of
their true self.
