Description
El natural (2008) is an original photopolymer intaglio with drypoint by Eduardo Naranjo (Monesterio, Badajoz, 1944), the foremost representative of Spanish magic realism and one of the great draughtsmen of his generation. The title refers both to the life model, "el natural", and to the tradition of drawing from life that is the foundation of Naranjo's art. Combining a photopolymer plate with direct work in drypoint, the artist achieves a velvety line and rich burr that lend the figure an almost palpable softness, while the surrounding space dissolves into a dreamlike atmosphere typical of his work, in which the real and the imagined coexist. Published by Taller del Prado (plate 39.5 x 54 cm, sheet 54 x 68 cm), the work is issued in an edition of 150 (75 in Arabic and LXXV in Roman numerals), hand-signed and numbered by the artist. Naranjo, who received the National Prize for Graphic Art of the Calcografía Nacional, is represented in the Museo Reina Sofía and in numerous Spanish and international collections.
Presentation
Eduardo Naranjo (born 1944 in Monesterio, Badajoz) is a Spanish painter and engraver, considered one of the foremost representatives of contemporary dreamlike magical realism, a style never lacking in enormous realism, beauty and poetry. A gifted artist from a very early age, in 1979, after his acclaimed exhibition at Galería Biosca, he was named "Best Visual Artist of the Year" by Blanco y Negro magazine. His 1993 retrospective at the Centro Cultural de la Villa in Madrid was visited by almost 250,000 people of many nationalities. In 1981, through his participation in the book "Constitución Española, 1978", he resumed his work as an engraver, which he has since alternated with painting. Among his many prints, the seven of "El Génesis" (1983-85) and the thirteen for Federico García Lorca's "Poeta en Nueva York" stand out and are known around the world. He has also worked in the theatre, collaborating on Lorca's "La casa de Bernarda Alba" with José Carlos Plaza at the Teatro Español, and on "Hazme de la noche un cuento" by Jorge Márquez, directed by Manuel Collado at the Teatro Bellas Artes. An artist who stands apart from fashion, with very few solo shows but a presence in countless group exhibitions alongside other great contemporaries, he is among the most prestigious and sought-after of his generation. His solo exhibitions include Galería Loring in Madrid (1971 and 1972), Biosca (1979), Galería Punto in Valencia (1980), the Centro Cultural de la Villa (1993), Leandro Navarro in Madrid (1999), several cities in Galicia (2000), and in 2002 Córdoba, Seville and the Museo de Bellas Artes in Badajoz.
