Description
In the Strates series, Geoffroy Didier works with fragments of wallpaper salvaged from the walls of buildings awaiting demolition. Carefully peeled away and reassembled, these materials bear the traces of the successive lives and transformations of the spaces they once inhabited.
The title Strates refers to the layers that constitute the walls of buildings, but also evokes the accumulation of time, memory and history embedded within them. By isolating, preserving and recomposing these fragments, Didier brings to light what would otherwise be erased or discarded. Detached from their original context, the wallpapers acquire a new material and visual autonomy, shifting from architectural remnants to works of art in their own right.
