Description
Mountain of a Woman Carved porcelain One of a kind.
Hodge's poetic porcelain plates examine and reimagine the history of art in a way that values women, not only in body, but in wholeness, power, and love. Focusing on the narrative qualities of art-making, Hodge weaves stories into the clay which are both personal and universal.
This artwork features a bold, abstract portrait, rendered with striking contrast and expressive lines. The central figure, with exaggerated features, is set against a backdrop of red and white horizontal lines, enhancing its visual impact. The figure’s elongated face and pronounced eyes convey an emotive, contemplative expression, while the subtle use of black adds depth and intrigue to the composition. The textured surface, created by deliberate, linear brushstrokes, draws attention to the layered complexity of the piece. Surrounding the portrait is a textured, roughly edged border that adds a tactile dimension, inviting viewers to explore the nuances within. The use of a limited color palette amplifies the intensity and focus on the character's enigmatic gaze, making this artwork both a compelling study in form and emotion.
___________
Alex Hodge was always drawn to the arts and regularly channeled her creativity as a child whether in watercolor classes or scrapbooking with her mother. Hodge focuses on prioritizing women’s narratives in all aspects of her work. Through the decorative and symbolic details, she hints at narratives without completing them to invite the viewer to participate in creating meaning. The women she invents exist in the present but is of the imagined future in which we all have room to flourish, to tell our stories, to give and receive love, and to express the beauty and pain of the human condition. Fundamentally, her artworks are a celebration of the tenacity and vulnerability of women and clay, an interplay of history and hope.
Presentation
Alex Hodge, born in 1994, is a contemporary ceramic artist and sculptor based in Georgia, USA. She holds a degree in ceramics from the University of Georgia, where she graduated summa cum laude, and earned her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Miami, receiving several academic awards throughout her studies.
Her artistic practice offers a poetic and critical exploration of femininity through ceramic art. Drawing inspiration from classical antiquity, Greek vases, mythological figures, and female archetypes, Hodge creates works that blend personal storytelling with cultural symbolism. Her pieces often take the form of engraved porcelain cups, narrative wall reliefs, and objects inspired by prehistoric Venus figures, questioning notions of memory, love, strength, and vulnerability.
She employs techniques such as hand-building, sgraffito, painting, and sometimes applies gold leaf to enrich the surface of her ceramics. Each piece functions as a narrative fragment, often inscribed with emotional texts or poetic lines that reflect her inner world and broader reflections on womanhood.
Alex Hodge’s work has been exhibited in various galleries and institutions across the United States. Through powerful series like Fragments of Our Love Story and Behind Closed Doors, she redefines the representation of women in art, embracing a deeply personal yet universal vision grounded in feminism, emotional memory, and art historical reference.
