Movimento delle arti nere
Il Black Arts Movement (BAM) è un movimento creato da artisti e intellettuali afro-americani, interessati alle arti visive, alla musica, alla letteratura e al teatro. Apparve nel 1965 quando il poeta Amiri Baraka (LeRoi Jones) aprì il Black Arts Repertory Theatre nel quartiere Harlem di New York. Il locale rimase aperto fino agli anni '70 e oggi Amiri Baraka è riconosciuto come il fondatore del movimento. Il BAM è un movimento artistico e culturale militante. Applicando le idee politiche del movimento Black Power alle arti, ha dato vita a molte nuove istituzioni culturali negli Stati Uniti. Membri di spicco di questo movimento includono James Baldwin, Gil Scott-Heron, Nikki Giovanni e Audre Lorde.
La BAM rifiutava le tradizionali influenze artistiche e letterarie occidentali e proponeva nuovi modi di rappresentare l'esperienza della comunità nera. Ci sono molte somiglianze tra il BAM e il movimento Harlem Renaissance degli anni '20 e '30. Entrambi segnarono una rinascita culturale delle arti afroamericane incentrate ad Harlem, anche se il BAM era più radicale nelle sue posizioni politiche. Questo movimento artistico e culturale ha avuto un impatto duraturo sulle arti negli Stati Uniti e in tutto il mondo.
