Politica dell'identità
Il movimento artistico della politica dell'identità è decollato tra gli anni '60 e '80 e ha seguito una serie di movimenti politiche pionieri riguardo alla diversità e alla rappresentazione visiva dell'identità personale. Di fronte alle tensioni nate dall'emarginazione di alcuni gruppi socio-politici e culturali negli Stati Uniti e In Europa, l’arte divenne rapidamente un simbolo di emancipazione sociale e di empowerment.
Stimolata dal movimento per i diritti civili dei neri degli anni '60 negli Stati Uniti, la politica dell'identità si riferisce a una serie di artisti e mostre che cercavano di onorare le esperienze di gruppi storicamente oppressi. I membri di questo movimento hanno rivoluzionato la rappresentazione dell'identità personale nell'arte, hanno protestato con veemenza contro la discriminazione contro determinate razze, generi e sessualità e hanno inaugurato una nuova era dell'arte celebrativo, variamente rappresentativo e spesso profondamente sovversivo.
I campioni del movimento della politica dell'identità nell'arte sono < a href="hhttps://www.artsper.com/fi/artisti-contemporanei/stati-uniti/1541/robert-mapplethorpe">Robert Mapplethorpe, Lorna Simpson, Judy Chicago, Martha Rosler e Felix Gonzalez-Torres. La proliferazione delle politiche identitarie è stata radicale e diffusa: gli artisti hanno celebrato gli spazi queer, ma ha anche messo in discussione i pregiudizi razziali e ha incoraggiato la seconda ondata di sforzi femministe.
