Biography
Bruno Botella sets up complex manufacturing processes whose goal is not to achieve a specific object but to go through the provisional states of matter. Sculpture is never more than a step in a process that the artist seeks to overflow. The objects, at the end of long research, must always be subjected to a new action, be cut into slices, immersed in water, turned over like a sock or thrown into a gutter, or according to the artist's words undergo "a twisted blow ”. The experimental character of his works is in line with failures, laboratory accidents and crazy machines with which we commonly associate the names of Frankenstein or Wile E. Coyote. Thus the forms are caught in the gears of machinations, programs firing on all cylinders, mobilizing all kinds of objects to ultimately cross a critical threshold, beyond which a catastrophe is always possible. Through experimental operations, the artist invents modes of reproduction of images and forms via changes of scale and metamorphoses linked to the properties of materials. Without apparent formal logic, his sculptures are linked by their creative process, they deliver the imprints of a cerebral process and arise from hallucinations, traps of perception and consciousness. Drawing is one of the major aspects of Bruno Botella's practice.
