Throughout the centuries animals have remained a source of inspiration for the artist and particularly for the sculptor. Animals were the main subject matter for the sculpture of the nomadic tribes of Eurasia and northern Europe and this animal art contributed to the rich tradition of animal sculpture in medieval art. The horse has always occupied an important place in Western sculpture, but other animals have also figured into the work of many. Classical Animal Sculptors have since rekindled an interest in representing animals. Some in order to highlight the dangers animals face against climate change (think Takeshi Kawano’s melting animal sculptures) and others who are taken with the beauty of our planet render sculpted animals who are almost glaring with life. In our works you’ll find Valerian Sioridzé who conveys this sentiment completely in his sculpture whilst Richard Orlinski reminds us that sometimes we are no different from animals we depict. What is apparent is that the beauty of animals has been rendered across millennia and still fascinates the sculptor today. Art thus provides a platform to spotlight that beauty, a reminder of all life through realism.
