Presentation

Born in Budapest, Paul Almasy is part of this generation of Hungarian photographers who came to settle in France in the 1930s.

After university studies in political science in Germany, in Munich, and in Austria, in Vienna, between 1924 and 1927, he was to become a diplomat but felt attracted by journalism and accepted a first mission of correspondent in 1925 in Morocco during the revolt of Abd el-Krim.

He began a long career as a photojournalist and traveled the world many times to cover stories for the press and for major institutions such as UNESCO and the WHO.

His in-depth journalistic work and his photographic treatment of long-term subjects clearly foreshadow the work of photographers such as Sebastiao Salgado.

Named "Master of Photography" by the European Council of Professional Photographers, Paul Almasy was also one of the founding members of Gens d'images, created by Albert Plécy.

Paul Almasy died in 2003 at the age of 97.
