Presentation
Anis Hani is a Tunisian painter, living in France; whose works question the traditions of the calligraphic arts of East and West from abstract art and gestural painting (the action painting). His paintings favor the calligraphic gesture while evacuating the concern for meaning and suspending the boundaries between schools and calligraphic traditions.
This artistic wandering is called chaos-spelling, which would be metaphorically illustrated by a collapse of the Tower of Babel in calligraphy. In this respect, Anis Hani's paintings are intended to illustrate this collapse and this chaos which, in an aesthetic way, borders on waste. Therefore, chaos-writing would be to calligraphy what abstract art was to figurative art. In this, it is inhabited by a permanent effort to emancipate the coded and saturated senses of the calligraphic icon, a sort of liberation from its traditions, its fantasies, its ghosts, even its unconscious.
It operates by primacy of gesture and percept over concept, and by primacy of sensation over meaning.
