Presentation
Andreas Gursky is a German photographer born in 1955 in Leipzig.
He began his photography training in Folkwangschule d'Essen where he was taught in a traditional manner at Bauhaus. In the '80s, Gursky finished his training at the Beaux-Arts in Düsseldorf.
Gursky began a personal process by focusing on nature. In his landscapes, he usually inserts subjects provided they are taken at an infinitely small scale compared to the huge size of the nature surrounding it.
Gursky's photographs are usually monumental and refined. The landscape is enormous while the subjects are tiny, Gursky is always playing around with these different macroscopic and microscopic scales.
In the '90s, Gursky decided to explore the world through his lens and photograph the surrounding elements. He mainly focused on globalization elements, such as shopping malls, sporting events or crowded scenes. He highlighted world architecture and the materials making it up, like glass and steel.
Gursky's works are among the most expensive photographs sold in the world at auctions.
