Biography
Born in 1957 in Dordrecht (Netherlands).
Official Painter of the French Navy
The sea is Dirk Verdoorn's favorite subject. Official painter of the French Navy, he spent a good part of his life on the water or at sea and
has found its way in renewing the genre of the navy. His pictorial research plays with contrasts, opposition systems. He stages a clash of the Titans based on a densified realism that shares his experience of the sea with us.
dirk Verdoorn confronts the industrial and wild worlds bringing modernity to the classic marine genre. on the one hand, he exploits the plastic qualities of these industrial maritime buildings such as container ships, ocean liners, trawlers. He highlights their monumental volumes, he explores their lines, their flat colors. on the other hand, with a touch of great precision, on the lookout for the smallest nuances, dirk Verdoorn seizes the sea in its elusiveness.
This pictorial confrontation is the strength of his work because sea and steel are revealed by contrast. The flat areas, the geometry, the volumes of the boats are opposed to the infinite cut of the surface of the water.
Straight lines oppose the break.
The uniqueness of the simple volumes of the boats confronts the fractal crash of the ocean: waves, ripples, foam, foam, droplets...
