Presentation

Marek Piasecki was born in Warsaw in 1935. His practice includes photography, graphic design, painting and sculpture. He is known especially for his three-dimensional pieces (showcases containing various objects from his collection), as well as photomontages and poetic and surrealist photographs.

Starting in 1955, he develops his abstract heliographies after an experiment with photosensitive materials; these become some of his most important artworks. He uses glass plate negatives, scratches their surface, applies various substances and exposes the photographs to different processes. His abstract heliographies were featured in the most important Polish exhibition of avant-garde art during the ?Polish Thaw? that followed Stalin?s death in 1953.

In the 1950s, the artist makes experiments in macro photography. He creates a series of tiny images full of black absurd humor. Piasecki?s documentary photography was a reference for all types of artistic practices of many journalists.

From 1954 he becomes interested in nude photography. This part of his work is inspired by his fascination for Italian neorealist cinema and the documentary films of the time.
