Art is the ability to ask the right questions.
Biography
Art & Language was founded in 1968 by Terry Atkinson , Michael Baldwin, David Bainbridge and Harold Hurrell. About thirty personalities (including Joseph Kosuth, Ian Burn and Mel Ramsden from 1969) are part of this group; today, only Michael Baldwin, Mel Ramsden and Charles Harrison are the only active members of the group.
At the end of the 60s, Art & Language is a group formed of English and American artists working as a team in order to advance conceptual art. Their reflections on art and its social role often correspond to a practical analysis that shifts the focus of art from the object to the context in which it emerges.
The various members of the group have written a considerable number of texts (some of them in the Art-Language journal) as an echo of the conversations that inspired their work . For them, the idea of a work and its production are strongly connected: their debates (or "conversations") are of foremost importance in their artistic production.
Mapping is a recurrent theme in the first proposals of Terry Atkinson and Michael Baldwin, starting with "Map of Itself".
