Artist Statement:

Inspired by nature, much of my art reflects the beauty that surrounds me. I love to paint the landscape on site but that's not always possible or practical so I spend time in my converted barn studio. Which isn't so bad either—I love my rustic studio in the woods of Maryland (just outside Washington, D.C.) and can easily get lost in there sketching, painting, or reading an art book.

My first medium was pastel and one that I always gravitate to. I love the immediacy of the medium as well as the intensity of hue. I find it a versatile medium that allows me to capture a mood, the light, and be expressive with my mark making. In addition to pastel, I work in oil and watercolor. And, I've been known to do a wood carving or two. I just like to create.

My work has been exhibited throughout the United States and it can be found in international private, public, and corporate collections. I've been fortunate to have received many awards and my work has been featured in several solo shows as well as in many group, invitational, and juried exhibitions.

I've enjoyed signature memberships with the Pastel Society of America, Maryland Pastel Society, American Impressionists Society, and membership groups such as the Audubon Artists and Washington Society of Landscape Painters.

Currently, my goal is to paint daily and with the focus on painting what is true for me from the heart. Without love of the craft it's just a job.

Education:

My undergraduate degree is in painting. I've studied drawing, oil, and watercolor painting but it wasn't until I was older that I decided to take some pastel workshops because I was self-taught in pastel and it was 'my' medium and I didn't want the influence of others to confuse it. I found that the I had plenty to learn from others. The primary lesson is that one can learn process without
