Biography

Lari Pittman, born in 1952 in Glendale, California, is a Colombian-American contemporary artist known for his large-scale paintings filled with decorative motifs, vivid color, and layered symbolism. His visually dense compositions explore identity, sexuality, politics, and collective memory, positioning him as a key figure in narrative and conceptual painting.

A graduate of CalArts, where he was influenced by the school’s feminist program, Pittman challenged traditional aesthetic hierarchies by integrating ornamental forms into fine art. His artwork has been exhibited in major institutions including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Hammer Museum, the Long Museum in Shanghai, and the Jeonnam Museum of Art in Korea.

Pittman is represented by Regen Projects in Los Angeles and Lehmann Maupin in New York, Seoul, and London. He has received prestigious honors such as the Skowhegan Medal for Painting and several National Endowment for the Arts fellowships, with works held in collections like MoMA, the Whitney Museum, and MOCA Los Angeles.
