Sam Francis was a renowned American painter and printmaker, known for his abstract expressionist works. One of his notable pieces is “Untitled (SF-343)", created in 1990. This lithograph is characterized by vibrant colors and dynamic shapes. Sam Francis was born on June 25, 1923 in San Mateo, California and died on November 4, 1994 in Santa Monica.
Sam Francis studied botany, and the psychology at Berkley.
He was a pilot of the US Air Force and in World War II, when his plane crashed and he suffered a serious spine injury. He is forced to stay in a hospital bed for fours years. This is when he receives a watercolor set and he starts to paint the sky, the clouds and perceptions of light.
In 1946 and 1947 he is still convalescent, but stays with an artistic community, and later on moves with his father. He marries Vera Miller, a childhood friend. After his recovery, Sam Francis studies art at the University of California, between 1948 and 1950.
In 1950, he divorces Vera Miller and moves to Paris with Muriel Goodwin. He stays in France until 1961. He is deeply touched by the work of Monet and Bonnard. He has his first solo show in Paris in 1952, an the Galerie du Dragon.
In 1957 and 1958 he starts to travel around the world and visits the United States, Mexico and Japan. He meets the painter Teruko Yokoi, who becomes his third wife.
Sam Francis works with white backgrounds on which he applies paint stains that drip, surround or free the open space. Marked by the use of color, his painting language is defined by a great creative energy, revealed by colored stains that modulate the space and the surface.
Later on in his career, Sam Francis plays with colors more and more; he covers his canvases, drawings and monotypes in color without worrying about formal issues (these are his ?Instant Paintings?).

Can I negotiate the price of an artwork?
For some artworks, you can negotiate the price. If the price of the work is negotiable, you have a “Make an offer” button under the “Buy this work” one.
To submit your offer, you must make a payment of the desired amount. Your offer will then be forwarded to the gallery, which reserves the right to accept or reject it. If your offer is accepted, it means that your order is confirmed by the gallery and they will prepare the artwork for shipment. If your offer is rejected, you will be refunded the total amount paid automatically. The gallery can also propose a counter-offer for the acquisition of the artwork.

Where can I have my order delivered?
Artsper delivers worldwide!
However, please note that once your order reaches its destination, it may be subject to VAT or other customs fees. These charges are beyond our control and you will be responsible for paying them (this is indicated at the ‘checkout’ first step).
Select the delivery address of your choice. Please make sure that someone is present to receive your order.

Return and cancellation
You can return the artwork without needing to provide a reason or pay a penalty fee up to 14 days after receiving your order.
In the case that the right of withdrawal is exercised in the aforementioned time frame, the price of the artwork(s) purchased and the shipping costs will be reimbursed by us as soon as the gallery has received the artwork and notified us.
Artsper will manage the return of the work and will bear the cost of returns (which will either be paid by you and refunded by Artsper or directly paid by Artsper).
The artwork must be returned in perfect condition and in its original packaging (or equivalent).
