Sport
À l'école, on a parfois tendance à opposer les sportifs et les artistes. Pourtant, bien souvent le sport et l'art se mêlent et se subliment l'un l'autre. La rencontre de ces deux disciplines est fréquente dans l'histoire de l'art et plus particulièrement dans l'art contemporain.
Déjà pendant l'Antiquité, les Grecs vouaient un culte absolu au corps athlétique parfait. Sur des pots et des vases, les artistes peignaient les exploits des concurrents des premiers Jeux Olympiques du 8ème siècle avant J.C.
Qu'importe le médium (photographie, peinture, sculpture, collage…), la musculature et l'état psychologique des sportifs, les lieux d'entraînement ou encore les compétitions sont des sources d'inspirations inépuisables pour les artistes. Entre représentation au plus près du réel et détournement d'un symbole, le sport est un thème récurrent chez les jeunes artistes.

La photographie d'abord, est probablement le support auquel on pense en premier dans la représentation du sport. Elle seule permet de capturer à toute vitesse les images des prouesses des athlètes. Ainsi, les clichés se prennent sur le vif pour offrir un meilleur rendu du mouvement et parvenir à saisir la tension palpable sur le terrain, la cohésion d'équipe, le moment crucial…
Chef de file de la nouvelle vague, Gerry Cranham a fait carrière dans l'athlétisme avant de devenir entraîneur. Passionné par la photographie, il prend en photo les jeunes qu'il accompagne afin de rectifier la position et d'analyser la foulée des coureurs. Très vite, il décide de convertir son hobbie en véritable métier. Il devient alors photographe sportif et se crée rapidement une réputation pour devenir un des fers de lance des photographes sportifs en Angleterre et sur la scène internationale. Ses clichés de rugby, football, tennis, catch et natation font le tour du monde dans les magazines les plus prestigieux comme Sport Illustrated ou The Observer.
Mais le sport inspire aussi les peintres et on le retrouve dans tous les mouvements artistiques du 19ème et du 20ème siècles. En 1853, Gustave Courbet peint « Les Lutteurs », une huile sur toile grand format représentant deux hommes pratiquant la lutte française dans l'ancien hippodrome des Champs Élysées. À droite, à l'arrière plan, on peut voir le public, encourageant les sportifs. Chez les impressionnistes, Claude Monet développe sa technique avec « Les Régates d'Argenteuil », un tableau de 1872 dans lequel les bateaux se reflètent dans l'eau de façon magnifique. Dans l'art moderne, l'œuvre « Les Footballeurs » de Nicolas de Staël représente un terrain de foot en plein match mais de façon abstraite. On discerne les joueurs grâces aux aplats de couleurs qui viennent constituer les maillots d'équipe.
