Biography

Baya (1931-1998), also known as Fatima Haddad, was an Algerian artist celebrated for her distinctive and vibrant artwork. 

Born in Bordj el-Kiffan, Algeria, she began painting at a young age and gained recognition for her unique style and subject matter. Baya's work often featured vivid colors, simplified forms, and playful compositions inspired by her Algerian upbringing and folk traditions. She was discovered by acclaimed artist and art collector André Breton in the 1940s, who was captivated by her talent. Baya's art gained international acclaim and was exhibited in various galleries and museums worldwide. Throughout her career, she produced a significant body of work that encompassed paintings, ceramics, tapestries, and illustrations.
