Primo concept or carboniferous art ... Michel Bocart's artistic approach consists in creating works that deconstruct the classic image of coal to show a metamorphosis. The artist deliberately rejects the idea of an educational work or History, economic news related to coal would intervene in direct suggestions. It puts forward the poetic aspect, a little shifted, even mysterious of the coal which implies the reflection of the spectator. These are indirect suggestions. Coal is the primary source which has allowed the development of all artistic concepts. Like other artists who have reinvented the canvas to conquer space, Michel Bocart conceptualizes charcoal: art reclaims its physical origins. Coal gives birth to Art; Art offers a rebirth to coal. Forms seek each other, get rid of their original identity to be reborn in the form of new lives. Through his work, Michel Bocart finalizes the protean cycle between concept and material. “We are in 2010. I plan to do a job with India ink. As I put the ink on the paper, chance leads my gaze to a few charcoal sticks lying on the table. I put down the brush, already throat of ink, grabbed a charcoal stick and crushed it firmly against the white paper. The charcoal black spreads out under my knowing fingers releasing its voluptuous triumphant shades. Several weeks of multiple tests followed with charcoal and earth. Convinced of the infinite creative possibilities of charcoal, the adventure begins ... ”- Michel Bocart
