Zhao Bandi is a contemporary Chinese artist, also known as Pandaman. He is a graduate of the Beijing Central Academy of Fine Arts (oil painting department).
He produces photographs, photomontages, paintings, sculptures and costumes. He uses paradigms from advertising and Chinese propaganda, which he reinterprets in his works. His intention is to inform the public about important political issues through his works.
The panda is a recurring character in his works. Zhao Bandi has organized a fashion show at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris called "China: a nation of pandas". Parodying the fashion parades, the Chinese artist presented thirty characters, stereotypes of today's China - the judge, the cyber sex worker, the beggar, the stakeholder ... all dressed in white and black, the colors of the panda. For Zhao Bandi, the panda is the symbol of the one-child policy in China.
