Presentation

Born in 1949 in Nice, Claude Urban left France in 1969 to settle in Germany where she lived until 2008 to settle permanently in the Pyrénées-Orientales where she spent her holidays and already had been exhibiting her works for several years.

In 1979 she discovered the art of ceramics after studying Modern Languages in Bochum (Germany), a subject that she taught for several years in Germany.

Although self-taught in ceramics, she was quickly recognized as an artist and in 1988 became a member of the Offenburg Region's association of visual artists, the Künstlerkreis Ortenau. It was within this association of professional artists she became very active and where she acquired her artistic training.

Claude has dedicated herself to ceramic sculpture since 1992. Passionate about all forms of this art she has been continually researching new techniques that have pushed her to evolve and reinvent herself constantly.

The sculptor Pierre-Guy Moreels, summed up her career well:

«Claude Urban is one of those artists who, for centuries, practice "the art of fire", and who are close to being magicians.»

As time passed, Claude decided to completely dominate the fire; there were the "blacks and whites" where the gesture took precedence over the flame.

We now find human forms, fantasy animals, where the eyes of childhood are never far away and where serenity finds its place; life companions and guardian totems as the main themes of her work.
