Laëtitia Deschamps

Laëtitia Deschamps is an artist born in Troyes and now living in Angers. Sensitive to art and the poetry, she decides to pursue studies in Visual Arts, which allows her to apprehend the different mediums: photography, sculpture, painting and ceramics. His practice takes a turning around 2014, when it decides to devote itself actively to the creation of a series of hybrid figures. Powerful and terrible images where myths and monsters meet.

The paintings of Laëtitia Deschamps are located 10,000 leagues from the delicate, the elegant or the graceful. We appreciate them as we tremble in front of steep peaks or majestic mountains. full asperities, they drag us to our inner chasms. They are the theater of delicious fears, devouring loves or sublime horrors. The strange titans of the artist manage to express this ballet of feelings. These figures emerge from the confrontation between the tool and the support. Laëtitia Deschamps painted using fresh laurel branches, which she uses like a whip to hit the paper or canvas, then to scratch them, rub them, scratch them. The impacts form large black abrasions, point of

departure of the work. From them the artist composes. She traces and circles stick figures - sorts chaotic golems, sometimes menacing, sometimes protective. The artist then detaches them by the addition of an ocher background, thus exacerbating their presence. This first series involved

necessarily large dimensions, if only to deploy such a technique.

In 2018 Laëtitia Deschamps participates in the exhibition Cent_titre (s). This is a new challenge for the artist. She, who usually explores large formats, must work on small surfaces about 30 by 30 centimeters. She nevertheless wished to keep the rough and marked spirit of her first series and achieves this by changing his technique. Branches and gestures were adapted to the format. Corporality remains central. However, we must purify, go to the essential,

master the rendering more, hold it in the heart of the canvas. For this, the artist decided to put us face to a series of hugs.

Are they wrestlers or entwined couples? Impossible to say. The physical outburst is there, releasing a mixture of violence and sensuality. The background plays partly in this ambivalence, because if the forms can give an impression of brutality, the funds tend harmoniously between two poles: the yellow and purplish gray. They are not struggling, they share space and intersect at its center.
