Biography

Born in Thessaloniki, Greece in 1983, Cornelia Komili originally studied museology, before deciding to become an artist, to challenge herself to create her own art.

She found herself incredibly motivated by landscapes, and wanted to encapsulate the atmosphere of a situation in a single image. The subjects of her painting are often abandoned places in the middle of nowhere, such as construction sites or car parks, which she sees as "interstitial" places. She admires the similar work of Jean-Marc Bustamante and feels close to De Chririco's paintings.

The relationship between constructed elements and organic ones are often at the centre of her work; her recurring motifs include buildings, trees and natural rock. Their forms contradict one another as well as the spaces in which they collide, interact and complement one another. Her framing is inspired by cinema: she prefers to combine many different elements within one image, intertwining the sky with a building and the city rather than keeping them separate.
