Zanele Muholi is a South African visual artist and activist celebrated for their powerful photographic work. Born in Umlazi, Durban, in 1972, Muholi studied at the Market Photo Workshop in Johannesburg and later earned a Master's degree in Documentary Media from Ryerson University in Toronto. Muholi's art primarily focuses on themes of identity, race, gender, and sexuality, particularly within the context of the LGBTQ+ community in South Africa. They are best known for their intimate and arresting portraits, which challenge societal norms and provide visibility to marginalized individuals. Muholi's work has been exhibited worldwide, receiving widespread recognition and numerous awards. In addition to their artistic endeavors, Muholi is actively involved in advocacy and activism, working towards social justice and equality through their art and activism.
