Biography
Joseba Eskubi (b. 1967) is a Spanish contemporary artist based in Bilbao, Spain, renowned for his expressive oil paintings that blend abstraction and figuration. His work is characterized by intuitive brushwork, fluid compositions, and layered mixed-media techniques, creating a dreamlike, organic aesthetic. Eskubi's art evokes pulsating, amorphous forms that seem alive, often compared to the dark, mystical worlds of Goya, Velázquez, and Hieronymus Bosch.
In 2024 he was featured in the prestigious group exhibition curated by Saša Bogojev at Albertz Benda Gallery, NYC. In 2025 Eskubi's first solo show with MEPAINTSME Gallery will present his latest abstract works, inviting viewers into a world of fluid forms and deep emotional resonance.
Eskubi is also an educator, teaching painting at the University of the Basque Country, while working from his studio near the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. His bold use of color, particularly red, violet, and rose hues, recalls the expressive intensity of Francis Bacon and Philip Guston.
