Biography

Ron English is an American artist born in Dallas, Texas in 1959, a pioneer of urban art and a fan of culture jamming. Using repurposed posters and elaborately technical paintings, Ron English plays with the iconography of multinationals, popular culture, and art history, such as Joe Camel, McDonald's, Vincent van Gogh , and Mickey Mouse, staging them in such a way that they are used against the values they are supposed to represent.

Aesthetically approaching the Pop Art movement, Ron English's works satirize globalization. He aims to create a new visual language, combining pictorial tradition with the colors of contemporary art. Ron English is considered one of the founders of modern street art culture.

Since the early 1980s , the artist has initiated and participated in campaigns promoting illegal public art. In 2008, he created and distributed the "Abraham Obama" poster, which combines the faces of former President Abraham Lincoln and Democratic candidate Barack Obama. Ron English is the subject of Pedro Carvajal's documentary film Popaganda, which features a portrait of the artist.

Always searching for the sublime in the everyday and trying to break the rules of a didactic approach to art and life, English offers an alternative universe where nothing is sacred, everything is subversive, and there is always room for a little good-natured humor.
