The San Ildefonso Pueblo near Santa Fe is best known for its gleaming blackware pottery, made famous by Maria Martinez. The village also can claim renowned painters throughout its history. One of them is Ramos Sanchez. Born March 17, 1926, he began to paint at age 5. 

The artist's watercolor/gouache paintings transport the viewer to his home in the historic San Ildefonso Pueblo. Sanchez's art reflects the ancient culture and traditions still practiced there today. Colorful, lively dancers, warriors, koshara clowns, kachinas, deer, antelope, horses and bison are celebrated in his vivid paintings, some of which are decorated with symbols of the mountains, earth, sky, sun and rain. Sanchez signed is artwork with his other name: Oqwa Owin.

He joined the Navy in 1944 at the age of 18 and served during World War II. Later in life Sanchez served at the vice chairman of the All Indian Pueblo Council and began work on various educational boards including the Eight Northern Pueblos' Council where he helped to recruit minority students into higher education. He retired in 1994 and spent most of his time producing traditional watercolor paintings.
