Presentation

Born in 1973, Juliette Agnel studied fine arts and ethno-aesthetics (Panthéon-Sorbonne University, Paris) and at the Beaux-Arts de Paris (1999). An encounter with Jean Rouch led her on a journey through African for over 10 years. In 2011, she designed and built a machine: a digital camera obscura with which she films and photographs.

Juliette Agnel's quest to understand the world is based on a global philosophical approach. This exploration leads her from the sky to the earth, from cosmic spaces to telluric forces, and now underground, exploring prehistoric caves. She photographs what is invisible in an attempt to open up the spiritual forces moving through the world.

“The art that moves me is this relationship between the real and the invisible, these forces that surround us but that we do not see. It is an authorization to believe in an absolute. In Greenland, Sudan, Dogon country or Finistère, it is the same quest that I tirelessly pursue: to grasp what unites us in depth, re- minding us that the human body is a significant fragment of the cosmos."

After the series Portes de glace, carried out in Greenland in 2018, she presents with Taharqa et la nuit photographs taken on archaeological sites in northern Sudan, revealing the traces of a vanished civilization, buried beneath the desert. Recently, in 2023, her series La main de l'enfant was exhibited at the Rencontres d'Arles in the cryptoportiques, were specially opened for the exhibition. That same year, she was awarded the Prix Niepce for the totality of her photographic work, which followed by the publication of a monographic book, Un autre monde, by Maison CF.
