David Varod, “painter, painter, painter … and only after that, Production Designer and then Film Producer.”

“A child of Nature”… Suffering from dyslexia, the young David didn’t fit in to the framework of school, or other people’s way of doing things. So he made his own world, a place to express himself, to release his anger and frustration, painting a world to escape to, where he could feel good. His way was different, he needed an artistic framework in which to live and develop. It was not something to share, but a harbour for his feelings…
Sixty years later, one look into his overflowing magical studio, awash with colour and emotion, and you know you are somewhere special…

David as a film designer found artistic expression without the threat of personal exposure, within the exterior constraints of script, budget and director.

David Varod as producer re-opened the Bulgarian National Film studios "Boyana" transforming the place from semi- abandon into one of Europe’s biggest Film Studios. For more than 17 years as the CEO and Chairman of the Board of the Directors, he developed the studios and raised them to top international standards, hosting the making of films such as "Black Dahlia", "Expendables" 2 and 3; "300: the Rise of an Empire", and many many more.

Throughout all these adventures, David never stopped painting. During his extensive travels for film work, the size of his canvas was always dictated by the size of the suitcase…

His life experience and his passions nourish the colours and emotions which dominate his many many colourful, expressive and very original paintings His naîve yet well-mastered technique, constant yet in evolution, conveys the force and the depth of his emotions.

Most of his paintings have the added particularity of a wooden frame with the painting continued colourfully into it, which draws the image outward into an interesting panoramic view of the subject… for David a way for the painting never to end…

At seventy, while still active in the film world, he paints prolifically, day and night, with sincerity and artistic integrity, producing his very interesting, colourful artworks. Much bigger ones than the suitcase size these days…

His work, kept private for so long, is now slowly being discovered. For so many years he has refused to sell his paintings publicly, but the insistence of his children, his grand children, his friends and a few private clients, has persuaded him at this stage of his life to release his soul and share his work with the world.
