Hoy en día es una técnicas fotográficas entre varias, pero es importante recordar que la fotografía en blanco y negro fue durante muchas décadas el único tipo de fotografía posible. Esta es probablemente la razón por la que sigue asociada con la historia y con el pasado.
En la década de 1830, Nièpce descubrió la técnica para fijar imágenes en placas de estaño. Tras su muerte en 1833, Louis Daguerre y luego François Arago prolongaron sus investigaciones y finalmente inventaron el daguerrotipo. Esta herramienta innovadora permite la impresión de una imagen en una placa de plata expuesta a la luz. Así nació la fotografía moderna.
Las primeras fotografías que surgieron fueron en blanco y negro. Aunque en un principio la fotografía se utilizaba simplemente para la investigación, más tarde se democratizó con la apertura de talleres de daguerrotipistas, inmortalizando los rostros de la burguesía, y luego de toda la población. Los fotógrafos también retrataron a las celebridades, como hizo Jean-Loup Sieff a lo largo de su carrera más de un siglo después.
Las primeras fotografías en color no tardaron en llegar. La técnica se inventó en 1860, pero no se generalizó realmente hasta un siglo después. Mientras tanto, varios artistas conocidos demostraron sus habilidades en fotografía artística. La fotografía callejera, por ejemplo, marcó fuertemente la tendencia del siglo XX con fotógrafos como Robert Doisneau, Brassai y Henri Cartier-Bresson. Los tres eran maestros de la foto espontánea y capturaban escenas efímeras. A veces con humor, a veces románticos, a veces incoherentes, nos llevan de viaje al pasado, provocando a menudo un sentimiento de nostalgia ante estos momentos raros y frágiles.
En Estados Unidos, el humanista Walker Evans fue el líder de la fotografía en blanco y negro, fotografiando la vida cotidiana de la América moderna. Unos años más tarde, Robert Frank también documentó los rostros de América, y especialmente de los estadounidenses, a través de magníficas fotografías en blanco y negro de composición singular.
Por supuesto, la fotografía en blanco y negro no se limita a la representación de escenas cotidianas. También puede sublimar paisajes, como lo demuestran las imágenes de Kasra. Los colores blanco y negro se funden perfectamente en la larga exposición para crear un efecto de suavidad, flotación y paso del tiempo completamente unico. Algunas obras fascinan por la complementariedad perfecta de estos dos colores: el negro, que a menudo se asocia con la oscuridad y la tristeza, y el blanco, que se asocia con la luz y la esperanza. Al menos en Occidente, porque en otras culturas, como Japón, puede tener un significado totalmente opuesto. En fotografía, el blanco y negro significa que se ha eliminado todo el color de la imagen, dejando sólo matices de gris que van del negro al blanco. Esto puede hacerse digitalmente o con película en blanco y negro.
Muchos fotógrafos y artistas utilizan la fotografía en blanco y negro porque elimina la distracción del color de una imagen. Esto permite prestar más atención a elementos de la imagen como la expresión facial o el gesto del sujeto, la composición o las formas y texturas.
La fotografía en blanco y negro suele realizarse con el mismo equipo que la fotografía en color (si se trata de una película, debe utilizarse una película en blanco y negro), pero los artistas pueden optimizar sus resultados buscando imágenes de alto contraste, fuentes de luz fuertes y texturas interesantes.
