The sculpture of Marcelo Burgos is deeply rooted in childhood. His series “The Monsters” draws on mixed references finding its inspiration from the fantastical creatures that inhabit children's imaginations, the world of cartoons, and African and Toltec sculpture.
Marcelo Martin Burgos is an Argentinian artist sculptor and director whose golden bronze sculpture are anchored in the childhood universe he is fascinated about. Growing up in an orphanage, where his father was the director, he was struck by the creativity and courage of the children living there, who used their imagination as a means to escape from their harsh reality.
His series “The Monsters” draws on mixed references finding its inspiration from the fantastical creatures that inhabit children's imaginations, the world of cartoons, and African and Toltec sculpture. The reflective surfaces of these polished bronze sculptures give them a totemic dimension and a presence that is “both protective and comforting” at the same time. As the artist put it: "I imagine them as powerful and innocent beings, like children. It is arrogant to think these sculptures can take you back to childhood, but sincerely, my aim is to conjure images and feelings that can remind us the most creative, amazing and frightening years of our lives."
