Anish Kapoor

Anish Kapoor was born in Bombay, India, in 1954 and is a contemporary artist specializing in sculpture.

He studied art at the Doon School in Dehradun, India, before moving to England in 1972. Once there, he studied at the Hornsey College of Art and the Chelsea School of Art and Design.

Kapoor's early works are sculptures covered in vibrant pigments, directly inspired by Indian spice markets, and placed on the ground. He also explored massive stones, incorporating elements like water, earth, and fire. Over time, his artworks became larger and more monumental. He began using mirrors and reflective materials to distort the viewer’s image, often featuring fine, curved lines in solid colors. Major influences on his art include painters Barnett Newman, Yves Klein, and Joseph Beuys.

A new kind of sculptor, Kapoor made his mark on the art market in the 1980s.

He was awarded the Turner Prize in 1991 for his sculptures that blend Western culture with his Eastern origins.

Kapoor's works are displayed around the world, and his creations increasingly resemble architecture due to their colossal size. One of his most famous works is the sculpture Cloud Gate (2004), which is approximately 25 meters long, 15 meters wide, and 12 meters high. This work is located in Chicago, a city renowned for its public art. Cloud Gate is a monumental work and a true technological feat.
