Jindrich Styrský was an important Czech painter, photographer, graphic artist, poet, representative of surrealism and theoretician. He worked closely with Toyen in an artistic duo and later both became members of the group Devetsil. Between 1925 and 1928 they both lived in Paris. He began as a cubist painter with a lyrical focus. Since his stay in Paris with Toyen, his work has moved towards surrealism, with dreams and their experience becoming his main source of inspiration. Styrsky was one of the first European artists to work with colour collage.
