Presentation

Born in 1928, Jeanne Socquet lives and works in Paris.

This is how Marguerite Duras, the famous French writer introduced the works of Jeanne Socquet: "This is our heads: yours, mine, a fabulous festival of our heads, brought by Jeanne Socquet to the surface of the swarm, the rot of the capitalist society. Idiots' heads, swollen, puffy, etc."

We cannot introduce Jeanne Socquet as Marguerite Duras did. For who would dare to continue as "a huge range of fooled, (...) force-fed to death for fear of retribution by capitalist oligarchies in place."

Jeanne Socquet, too political or too naive, too sincere and curious about people, about us, about herself, about others and their involvement in all forms of misery. Socquet says herself: "My painting can be seen as political; it is however never the case. Besides, I do not denounce, I point out things, facts I find important. "

At first, these are portraits of women, enclosed in an asylum, which the artist has had the opportunity to observe. These are marginalized people, hidden from the eyes of society, behind walls, she decided to paint. Currently, animals and vegetation are more numerous than portraits in the paintings of Jeanne. Whether they fascinate, shock, frighten or excite, at least these portraits will not leave you indifferent.

These characters, including those "drawn" or rather carved, or fabricated from sardine cans, pins, lace scraps and old buttons, she calls them her fellows because for the painter, the presence of the human is essential in her production. Emotion remains after seeing her work. These faces are embedded in our memory because they are captivating and almost violent.
