Presentation
PHASE 2, also known as Lonny Wood, was an American graffiti artist born in 1955 in The Bronx. Predominantly active in the 70s, Wood's aerosol paint work could be seen across New York, and he is credited as the origin of the 'bubble letter' graffiti style as well as the use of arrows.
Wood was present on the local hip-hop scene from a young age and saw street art as a way for him to 'represent his existence' whilst keeping anonymity, originally tagging subway cars. He started to gain attention after joining the United Graffiti Artists collective, and then established the first 'zine' about graffiti culture, the International Get Hip Times. Wood was also a rapper and break-dancer or 'b-boy' and became one of the pioneers of New York's early 80s hip-hop culture.
