Biografia
Shepard Fairey, in arte Obey, è uno street artist e grafico statunitense nato nel 1970 a Charleston, Stati Uniti . Appassionato di grafica fin dall'età di 14 anni, ha iniziato creando progetti per magliette e skateboard. Influenzato da Andy Warhol e Alexander Rodchenko, si dedicò rapidamente agli studi artistici.
Verso la fine degli anni '80, insieme agli amici della Rhode Island School of Design, lanciò una campagna virale di adesivi e poster utilizzando l'immagine del wrestler André the Giant. Collocate clandestinamente nelle principali città americane, queste opere segnano la storia della street art contemporanea e dimostrano la potenza di questa nuova forma di espressione artistica.
Shepard Fairey ha raggiunto la fama mondiale nel 2008 con il suo iconico poster HOPE, creato per Barack Obama e divenuto simbolo della campagna presidenziale. Nel 2024 rinnova il suo impegno politico realizzando il manifesto "Avanti", a sostegno di Kamala Harris. Ispirata da HOPE, questa opera è stata adattata sotto forma di murales in diversi stati chiave per incoraggiare la mobilitazione degli elettori. Nel 2021, Shepard Fairey ha reinterpretato Marianne, simbolo della Repubblica Francese, unendo street art e impegno politico in un omaggio alla libertà.
Nonostante le controversie legali sulla proprietà intellettuale, Shepard Fairey continua a esporre le sue opere nei principali musei d'arte contemporanea. Nel 2022 ha realizzato un affresco monumentale a Monaco di Baviera, in collaborazione con il Dipartimento di Arte e Cultura, per promuovere le energie rinnovabili.
