Curatorial Statement
At MIA Photo Fair 2023, LIGHTWORKS presents a curated dialogue between contemporary and vintage photography, exploring the evolving language of the human form, identity, and sensuality through the lens of four influential photographers: George Mayer, Sam Haskins, F.C. Gundlach, and Tony Potts.
The booth’s central focus is on the timeless interplay between shadow and light, structure and softness, composition and emotion. George Mayer’s sculptural black-and-white portraits and graphic red circle compositions anchor the exhibition with modernist elegance and psychological depth, drawing viewers into a world of surreal poise and introspection.
In contrast, Sam Haskins brings a playful yet radical approach to the female nude — celebrating sensuality and spontaneity with striking graphic clarity. His compositions challenge conventions and echo the cultural liberation of the 1960s with visual wit and flair.
F.C. Gundlach’s fashion photography adds historical resonance to the presentation, offering bold compositions and narratives rooted in the avant-garde spirit of the mid-20th century. His iconic imagery — elegant, enigmatic, and impeccably staged — bridges the realms of fashion, design, and art.
Tony Potts contributes a minimalist yet emotionally charged view of the body and portraiture. His photographs invite quiet contemplation, revealing the beauty of form, stillness, and intimacy.
Together, these four artists form a curated constellation that is visually captivating and conceptually rich — a celebration of photographic artistry across generations, unified by a devotion to form, feeling, and timeless beauty.
