Photography is often associated with the real; the tangible and believable. However, fantasy photography is an entire photographic genre that diverges from that idea, instead exploring supernatural, mythical and legendary themes. Whether you're a fan of Tolkienesque worlds, or simply looking to delve into a new visual genre, you're sure to be captivated by the artworks in this collection. Mystical landscapes, enchanting light and dark effects, bewitching colors: discover shots that flirt with the surreal.
Fantasy is a theme that has been quickly appropriated by cinema and literature but in photography, a medium better suited for documentary images, it took a while before it became popular. In the 1960s photographers started to be interested in imaginary, dreamlike, and invisible elements, as opposed to the trend chasing the “decisive moment" that dominated photography. Fantasy is fascinating through its wonderful and naïve elements as well as through its monstrous and cruel ones. Certain artists have specialized in this genre, such as Cindy Sherman, Pierre et Gilles, Sarah Moon, Grégory Crewdson, Deborah Hally, Jeff Bark, Desirée Dolton, Erwin Olaf, Bronek Kozka and Vivien Racault.
