Many artists have left their mark on art history and created a legacy that endures even today. These famous artists, great names whose artworks are familiar to all of us, have revolutionised the art world, each of them in their own way.
Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Edgar Degas, Auguste Renoir and many others introduced a new way to paint reality. They sought to reproduce shapes, lighting, colours, as they saw them, and how they experienced them. They rejected the conventions of academicism that had prevailed in the visual arts until then. Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali and René Magritte reinterpreted reality and deconstructed their subjects with Cubism and Surrealism. Wassily Kandinsky and Piet Mondrian rejected the idea that the visual arts needed to be figurative and they turned to abstract art to express feelings, emotions and ideas.
In Pop Art, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein wanted to democratise the artwork. They drew inspiration from advertisements, popular culture and the nascent consumerist society and reproduced images multiple times, negating the role of 'uniqueness' in art. Jean Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring used the city walls as their canvas, making it clear that neither museums nor art galleries defined art. With conceptual art, artists such as Marcel Duchamp and Joseph Kosuth chose to bring idea to the forefront of art and lessen, or reject, the importance of aesthetics and appearance. David Hockney is the king of contemporary landscapes and now the most expensive living artist.
Each of these renowned artists made decisive decisions in their artistic practice and through their work they have defined the art world as it is today. The world's most famous artworks inspire us all, artists included, and young contemporary artists are putting their own twist on ubiquitous masterpieces. As they forge their own way and find their own place in the art world, many follow in the steps of these great masters, drawing inspiration from their signature styles and techniques. In this collection, you'll find our themed selections containing artworks that are inspired by the renowned artists of yesterday and today.
