For a long time, the “hierarchy of genres" limited the scope of themes deemed acceptable within the figurative arts. In order from most prestigious to least prestigious, the hierarchy of genres was: history, portraiture, everyday life scenes, landscape or cityscapes, animal art and finally still life. Idealism was often privileged over realism, following the Platonist philosophy that art should "render visible the universal essence of things," rather than be a mere mechanical copy. It was only towards the end of the 19th century that artists and art critics started to rebel against academicism and broadened the scope of the subjects depicted. The Impressionists excelled in depicting the everyday and the newfound leisure time of the growing middle class. Artists in the 20th century looked at the mundane and the ordinary with sustained interest. The late 50s and early 60s marked another period of great change thanks to the advent of Pop Art, that looked at comic books, advertising, and branding.
Nowadays, contemporary artists draw their inspiration from all kinds of daily activities and the arts are more than ever intertwined with one another. They capture their contemporary popular culture through their art, drawing inspiration from everything from music to fashion and religion and politics. Artists socially and politically engaged artists, the vision of art as a political statement rather than a mere “pretty" aesthetic (opposed to “l'art pour l'art" movement) is prevailing within contemporary artworks.
