Nature has always been one of the greatest inspiration for artists. Each civilisation and century has had its developed its own ways of representing nature. Landscape paintings have been popular in Asia almost since drawing and painting developed. In Europe, however, landscapes only developed as an independent genre in the 17th century. Sometimes idealised, symbolic, or realist, landscapes has created numerous interpretations in which artists express the relationship they have with nature.
Today, our relationship with Nature has dramatically evolved. Since the 1960s, the increasing urbanisation has led us to be concerned with questions on ecology and the preservation of nature, and in today's context, ecological awareness is vital to our relationship to the world.
The artists' sensitivity to nature seems like the perfect way for helping us to reconnect to our roots. Contemporary art often represents nature in a more expressionist, rather than realistic way. Artists such as Christine Drummond produce vibrant landscapes with the help of her palette knife, which creates texture and adds a unique touch to her work. Her paintings create a joyful, happy atmosphere, a perfect way for us to reconnect with the wonders of nature. With a similar approach, Joëlle Kem Lika depicts poetic still lives and landscapes that won't fail to have a soothing effect.
Moreover, our “Contemporary Still Lifes" selection proves that contemporary artists are reinvigorating the Still-Life tradition. Cézanne, who was fond of this genre, helped introduce the artistic practice of still life into modern art. Today, artists have taken hold of this theme, reinterpreting it with modern and contemporary movements as varied as cubism, hyperrealism or Pop Art. While the French painter Roger Courtois' takes a minimalist stance for creating his still lifes, the artist Gérard Willemont plays with the art of trompe l'oeil to trick the viewer.
