Como señaló el fotógrafo suizo Robert Frank, "el blanco y el negro son los colores de la fotografía. Para mí, simbolizan las alternativas de esperanza y desesperación a las que la humanidad está siempre sometida". Ambas emociones pueden desprenderse de la relación del hombre con el paisaje. Sacar el elemento del color de la representación de la naturaleza es revelar la verdadera expresión. Los fotógrafos que lo hacen, a menudo inspirados en las primeras imágenes de la década de 1820, abandonan el cromatismo vivo por una conexión profunda con el entorno natural. Más de un siglo después, el fotógrafo Ansel Adams cimentaría el legado de la fotografía de paisajes en blanco y negro. Sus vastos retratos de los paisajes naturales de EE.UU. tuvieron y siguen teniendo una influencia espectacular en los fotógrafos que han seguido sus pasos desde entonces. Owen's Valley California (1937) de Adams explora todo el espectro que pueden revelar los tonos del blanco y negro y, dentro de ellos, el asombro del mundo natural. En la actualidad, Miguel Winograd y Alessandro Puccinelli retratan la amplitud de las vistas de la naturaleza con sus emotivos paisajes marinos.
