Arte Marginal
La expresión « art brut » fue inventada en 1972 por el crítico de arte Roger Cardinal. Se trata de un movimiento creado por artistas autodidactas o « naïfs », que escapan a la tradición y han tenido poco o ningún contacto con una enseñanza artística tradicional. A menudo, el término art brut se usa para etiquetar a artistas con trastornos mentales, portadores de ideas no convencionales, o comportamientos infantiles, y estos artistas generalmente son descubiertos solo después de su muerte. Pero la etiqueta se refiere únicamente a la naturaleza de los artistas; las obras de arte mismas son extraordinariamente variadas en términos de género y apariencia.
A pesar de la marginación histórica de los artistas partidarios de este movimiento, el art brut es ahora una corriente reconocida. La feria « Outside Art Fair » se celebra en Nueva York cada año desde 1993 y publica regularmente revistas dedicadas a este tema.
